Wireless Pipe Wear Monitoring

Wireless pipe wear monitoring system

Monitor material loss on key assets

Scanimetrics' Wireless Wear Sensing tools provide state-of-the-art equipment condition monitoring support to industrial assets in order to observe material loss and extend lifecycles.

General Description

The Wireless Pipe Integrity Monitoring System provides easy automated means of accurately monitoring thickness and strain on pipelines with a high degree of repeatability for Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) applications. Pipelines which have excessive wear, such as slurry, tailings and certain oil pipelines, significantly benefit from such monitoring since it enables the pipe to be rotated or serviced in an optimal manner to achieve extended pipe life. Competitive systems only monitor pipe thickness, not strain. However, monitoring strain provides additional valuable information about the integrity of the pipeline, especially for applications where the pipeline is under pressure or has external forces applied on it. In addition, competitive options for thickness monitoring are not cost effective to monitor the entire pipeline. As a result, manual measurements are more commonly employed, resulting in data that is unreliable, and therefore not useful for predictive modeling.

The system obtains pipe thickness and strain readings using wear sensors and strain gauges and stores the readings in the Wireless Sensor Pods (referred to as “Motes”) which are installed at the measurement location. The readings are then transmitted to a Master located at one end of the pipeline. Data can be downloaded to a nearby computer with a direct connection to the Master, or to a Remote Server via an Internet Gateway with a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. An application running on the server processes the data and serves up a secure website where customers can view the data in tabular and/or graphical format, and export the data for further analysis. The server application can be programmed to notify key contacts by email, text message, and/or voice call if pre-set alarm thresholds are reached, to enable immediate attention, and avoid field failures and production losses.
